Traditional ab exercises like crunches and sit ups are often used in hopes of achieving a stronger core and more defined abdominals, but this is an extremely inefficient method. When you perform repetitive, crunches and sit-ups they cause more harm than good. 

Problem #1:
Since sit-ups and crunches involve lying on your back and repeatedly bending and extending your spine. They place excessive strain on the part of your low back that has the most nerves and is most prone to wear and tear giving you disc bulge and disc herniation.
